Dear Ms. Sun Wah,
Thank you for contacting me regarding relations between the United States and Iran. I appreciate hearing from you about this very important issue.
Iran poses a significant potential threat to the U.S. and our allies, especially Israel. I am deeply concerned about Iran’s continued ambition to develop its nuclear program and the possibility this capability may be used to develop a nuclear weapon in the future. Regional and international security would be gravely threatened by Iranian nuclear weapons. While U.S. intelligence and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have not verified that Iran has decided to pursue a nuclear weapon, I remain concerned by reports from the IAEA that Iran’s nuclear program is continuing to advance. Most recently, on February 24, 2012, IAEA nuclear inspectors reported that Iran was moving rapidly toward production of low enriched uranium in its new facility at Fordo.
As you may know, President Barack Obama has made clear his policy to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. And to do so, all options are on the table, including the use of force. In an address on March 4, 2012, President Obama stated his firm belief that a window of opportunity still remains for diplomacy and robust international financial sanctions to have an impact on Iran’s decision to pursue a nuclear weapon. While the U.S. has imposed strict sanctions against Iran for decades, President Obama approved the most stringent sanctions to date when H.R. 1540, the Fiscal Year 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), was signed into law.
The NDAA contains a provision, which I supported, to impose sanctions on the Central Bank of Iran (CBI). The CBI has been identified as a key financial facilitator of Iran’s nuclear program, as well as activities related to international terrorism. European countries and Canada have also announced similar sanctions aimed at shutting off Iran’s access to foreign banks and credit.
As you also may know, Senator Lindsey Graham (SC) recently introduced Senate Resolution (S.Res.) 380, expressing the sense of the Senate regarding the importance of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons capability. Senator Graham introduced S.Res. 380 on February 16, 2012. Upon introduction it was referred to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee where, at this time, no further action has occurred.
As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I take the issue of Iran’s growing nuclear capability very seriously. The president’s use of sanctions and diplomacy to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon should be given an opportunity to reach an outcome that is acceptable to the U.S. and the international community. Currently, the U.S. is working in conjunction with the member nations of the UN Security Council to secure a negotiated agreement with Iran to open Iran’s facilities to international inspectors to verify that Iran’s nuclear program is not being used to develop a nuclear weapon.
While ensuring Iran does not develop nuclear weapons is very important, we must not forget that, in addition to its disregard for the international community on the issue of nuclear weapons development, the regime currently in power has an abhorrent civil liberties and human rights record. In the past five years, hundreds of newspapers have been closed, hundreds of pro-reform websites have been blocked, and untold numbers of people have been unjustly imprisoned. It is essential that, as our nation engages with Iran, we continue to push for change, not only on its foreign policies but also on its treatment of its own people.
You also may be interested to know that I am a member of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE), also known as the U.S. Helsinki Commission. Please be assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind as I continue to work with my colleagues on the Helsinki Commission and on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to advance the goal of a more peaceful and prosperous world.

We Need To Save Our One World
Dear Senator Udall,
We need to save America from Zionists control of America and our One World.
If we fail to stop Netanyahu in what seems to be his strong desire to pre-emptively bomb Iran within these next six months, the consequences will be catastrophic. This was what I have written and believe; “Zionism has Destroyed PALESTINE and now it is on the march to destroy our One World if we fail to stop them from bombing Iran! I hope the world can count on all of you senators to give us the support we need to halt Israeli aggression.
Let’s bring America back where it belongs; “The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave”, because together we can stop the Zionists’ aggression and Unity is Strength.

This is my reply to Senator Rand Paul.
Thank you very much for the reply. I would like you to know I have received a reply from President Obama and I did reply to him.

You said, “Starting in 2002, the Iranian government announced their intent to construct two underground heavy-water nuclear facilities. This action worried many because heavy-water nuclear facilities can be used to enrich weapons grade uranium for the production of nuclear weapons.” Have you see this full documentary – The BBC Film That Exposed Israel’s Secret Illegal Nuclear Weapons? http://www.youtu.be/WMOtvSGJVvc
Iran signed the NPT (Nuclear nonProliferation Treaty), Iran joined the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), allows IAEA inspectors to their facilities, Iran did not Invade Anyone, Iran doesn’t have any nukes.
While
Israel refused to sign the NPT, Israel refused to join the IAEA, refused to allow IAEA inspectors to their Secret Illegal Nuclear Facilities, Israel invaded all of their neighbors, openly commits genocide and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinians & Israel has hundreds of Nukes.
We MUST do our very best to stop Netanyahu government to bomb Iran because there is too much to risk in the Middle East if he does so. The stability of the entire region would be subject to further threat, and I don’t think the US nor Israel nor any of the other Middle Eastern country would want that. Imagine the phenomenal spike we would see in oil prices if that were to happen!

Dear Senator Tom Udall,
Thank you for your reply. May I take this opportunity to wish you a belated Happy New Year. With your support and that of your fellow senators, may the New Year bring great hope and joy to the Palestinian people and the realization of their wish of a homeland in Palestine.
So far I have received 18 letters from the Senators and I have replied to them all. To see my responses, please see: http://dearmmlee.wordpress.com/category/petition-palestine/
You said, “While I believe pursuing peace negotiations should be a priority, I also do believe that every sovereign nation has the right to defend itself against attacks on its citizens and its security. The ongoing violence in the region has resulted in suffering on both sides, and I believe efforts should be made to improve the daily lives of citizens throughout the area.”
Yes, I do agree with you that every sovereign nation has the right to defend itself against attacks on its citizens and its security, but what of the Palestinian’s land that should have already been considered a sovereign nation? Somehow, you seem to be ignoring the fact that the Palestinians have some claim on that land, too, yet you are only recognizing the Israelis’ as a sovereign nation. The Palestinians remain second class citizens as long as the Israeli government refuses to implement the 1993 Oslo agreement signed by Yitshak Rabin and I think the violence will stop when the occupation stops.
The Palestinians have not asked for the enforcement of the 1948 agreement in which the United Nations agreed to give the Palestinians 45% of the disputed land. The Palestinians have only asked the Israelis to implement the peace agreement that was signed and is now long overdue. They have been waiting for almost twenty years to have a homeland for their people.
Maybe after you read Mr Matthew Isaac Weiss comment on the Palestinian bid at the United Nation http://dearmmlee.wordpress.com/category/petition-palestine/palestinian-bid-at-un/
Perhaps you can sympathize with the Palestinian plight for a homeland even more after reading it.We can no longer afford to be spectators because the world needs us now more than ever. For world harmony to be a reality, the Palestinians must have a homeland. At the very least, please pray for the Israelis and Palestinians to have a bright future for their children because both parties have suffered enough. As then PM Yitshak Rabin said, “Enough is enough” and we the citizens of the world agreed with him.
Love, light, peace, harmony and unity,

Dear Ms. Sun Wah,
Thank you for contacting me regarding Israeli-Palestinian relations and the Middle East peace process. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian territories threatens our security here at home and the United States must take a leadership role in establishing enduring peace in the Middle East. While it is essential that we continue our partnership with Israel and ensure that it has the capacity to defend itself and is treated fairly in international institutions, it also is important that we continue to work with those Palestinians who have sought a peaceful solution.
As you may know, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas recently submitted an application to the United Nations (UN) asking that the body recognize “Palestine” as a new member state. I firmly believe that only a two state solution can lead to a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinian people. Unfortunately, this action in the UN is not productive, and will not lead to an outcome we all desire. For the Palestinians, the goal of nationhood can only occur through negotiations with Israel. And for Israel, a two state solution will enable its people to enjoy a secure and peaceful future. UN action will not resolve the issues acting as a roadblock to peace. I recently spoke on the floor of the Senate to address this issue. Click here to see my speech.
For too long, both Israelis and Palestinians have suffered because of an inability to reach a two-state solution. While Palestinian and Israeli leaders have recognized the necessity of two states – each state benefitting from self-determination and mutual recognition – Hamas’ reliance on terror and its refusal to recognize Israel’s right to exist have repeatedly led to a breakdown in direct talks. Many Palestinians in the West Bank also are upset by Israel’s continued settlement construction in the region. President Obama has called on the leaders of both people to act boldly to advance a lasting peace in the region and resume talks.
In calling for the resumption of talks during a speech on May 19, 2011, President Obama stated his administration’s support for finally starting serious negotiations to create a Palestinian state. As have the past two Presidents, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, President Obama has stated that onset of negotiations should be based on the border that existed before the 1967 war that gave Israel control of the West Bank and Gaza. However, the president also said that he supports mutually agreed upon land swaps to account for Israeli settlements that are beyond this border. While there is some disagreement about this concept, we all agree negotiations must start so the region can achieve a lasting peace. We cannot wait much longer.
While I believe pursuing peace negotiations should be a priority, I also do believe that every sovereign nation has the right to defend itself against attacks on its citizens and its security. The ongoing violence in the region has resulted in suffering on both sides, and I believe efforts should be made to improve the daily lives of citizens throughout the area. Please be assured that I will continue to push for a lasting peace, which I believe the majority of Israelis and Palestinians desire. I will keep your thoughts in mind should any legislation regarding this issue come before the Senate during the 112th Congress.

The success of the “Arab Spring” tells us that a “Global Spring” is possible to achieve, too. And it can begin with nothing more than a click of your mouse supporting our petition. The Palestinian people need our support now more than ever, for a “Global Spring” to finally achieve a homeland for their people. To build a better world, everyone must care. We must have the strong faith that we can build a better world for all.
