Thank you for contacting me regarding aid to the Palestinian territories. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.
As you know, I was a cosponsor of S. Res. 185, a resolution reaffirming the United States’ commitment to a negotiated settlement between Israelis and Palestinians through direct negotiations between the parties. In addition, this resolution reaffirms our opposition to Hamas and states that if the Palestinian Authority attempts to gain recognition of statehood, outside of direct negotiations with Israel, it will have serious implications for continued United States aid.
On October 31, 2011, Palestinian Authority was granted full membership in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In response, I fully supported President Obama’s decision to cut U.S. funding to this organization. Ultimately, the creation of a Palestinian state and the end of the conflict will only be achieved through direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, not through a vote at the United Nations.
